| >Manchester Metropolitan University: The Gallery & The Axis Arts Centre |
OVERVIEW The gallery represents the strong practice of research culture in the Department and currently runs a series entitled 'Curating Knowledge'. Artist/ researchers are invited to take up residency in the space for one week to develop work, experiment, reflect, interact with a variety of publics, hold seminars and discussions, etc. A website is developed as part of this as a space where these processes and the various interactions with them are documented. Students, staff and members of the public benefit from these events and cross-fertilisation of ideas, seen to be particularly important considering our rural location. Students from a variety of disciplines (media, performance, dance, writing, music) use the space for a number of exhibition/ events throughout the year. NUMBER AND SIZE OF EXHIBITIONS Individual and group projects. Term time only. Usually about ten per year. SPECIFIC FOCUS Interdisciplinary, experimental, process-based, discursive. MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION The Gallery is run by Jane Linden, with support from colleagues and students. Neil Mackenzie runs the Axis Arts Centre. RESEARCH AND FURTHER PROJECTS All exhibitions are documented and the Curating Knowledge Project website is ongoing. We hope to develop the project generally and would like to invite further exchange with other institutions across Europe. Locations may change but the concept prevails. CURRENT NETWORKS OR COMMERCIAL PARTNERS The Gallery is attached to the Axis Art Centre. ASPIRATIONS AND INTENTIONS FOR THE CHEAD GALLERY NETWORK Generally to network and to generate further interest in the Curating Knowledge Project, giving opportunity for artists and the research community to exchange ideas about practice and its encounters. To generate further audiences for contemporary work and activities which function as experiences rather than spectacles. CONTACT Jane Linden Tel 01612 475 345
