Art & Design – a Wider Responsibility: CHEAD Annual Conference 2007
Cardiff, 21 – 23 March 2007
The highlight of the CHEAD calendar, the 2007 Annual Conference was held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff in March. It focused on the wider responsibilities facing Art & Design Higher Education institutions at the outset of the 21st century, and how A&D HE institutions can lead in addressing this challenge in a coherent and strategic way. A total of 71 academics attended the conference. Plenary speakers included Prof. Michael Braungart, EPEA Umweltforschung GmbH, Prof. Phil Jones, Welsh School of Architecture, Mike Tooby, National Museum of Wales, and the artist Stephen Turner. The conference key note speech was given by the Rt Hon Lord Smith of Finsbury. While the plenary presentations outlined the broader questions along with possible answers, those ideas were then taken forward in various workshop groups, which were lead by senior academics and research leaders from CHEAD member institutions and practitioners working within the field of sustainable design. Workshop leaders included Alan Strong, University of Ulster, Julia Cassim, Royal College of Art, Prof. Lorraine Gamman, Central Saint Martins College of A&D, Linda Farrow, White Design Associates, and Prof. Martin Charter, U Creative at Farnham. Finally, in his speech after the Annual Dinner Geraint Talfan Davies, Chairman, Institute of Welsh Affairs, welcomed CHEAD to Cardiff and, following up Lord Smith’s talk, offered a more light-hearted, though no less sincere, plea for leadership to address the above challenges.
